50 The Northern Belledonne Chain
Geography |
The series of summits forming the northern part of the crystalline Belledonne chain culminates at the Puy Gris (2 908 m/9 541 ft), and then gradually decreases in elevation to the north. Ancient cirque glaciers have cut through the slopes, forming a long and relatively inaccessible crest.
The major part of the chain is situated in the Savoie department.

Landscape |
This part has the same geomorphology and the same natural landscape features as the southern part of the chain. Nevertheless, it covers a smaller area, its peaks stand out less distinctly, and in particular access is more difficult, especially through the Bréda Valley. Because of this, it is much less visited, giving it a more intimate character, in the northern part of the department. It extends and reaffirms the emblematic character of the southern part of the chain, making the chain as a whole seem endless in scale.
